GOOD.Residue of owner's pencilled name partially erased,price-clipped [originally 6/-] title page.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial artwork by Alfred BESTALL illustrated boards; with some shelf-wear to edges,but all the corners inevitably bumped with some reciprocal rubbing and minimal loss to same.Laminate breaking, cracked in a couple of places to spine/ backstrip.Foot of spine's gutter edges front+ rear,each with a small vertical 1.5cm split and with concomitant,minimal paper illustration missing (also approx. 1/5cm),and head of spine with 1.5cm loss/missing too.Head+foot damage of spine seems to be a common and almost ubiquitous fault/occurence from other personally handled and noted examples.Upper board has minimal scoring/indents,with a small triangular-shaped area of laminate missing over the Siamese cat's head,rear board with small,missing areas of laminate at head+foot of gutter folds/crease.Top +fore-edge slightly aged; contents bright,tight and generally clean for book's age,Magic Painting pages have been removed - pp3/38 inclusive - some residual watercolour paint (from last page of Magic Painting,book being closed before paint dried!)to illustrated Rupert and the Jackdaw separator page,a closed tear to bottom edge of pp17/8 but no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK, slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,4-114pp [paginated - minus Magic Paintings!] includes 4 colour strip stories,2pp origami instructions to make a rabbit or hare; plus [unpaginated] contents list/table to reverse of front free endpaper, colour illustrated title page and publisher's advert to verso of rear free endpaper.Cover: Rupert and a few friends on a snow-covered hill slope,pulling a dog on a sledge.First story: Rupert and the Lost List (1957-8); plus 3 others,Rupert and the Jackdaw (1958),Rupert and Floppity (1958),and Rupert and the Carved Stick (1958). Described hard,but fairly and honestly - would still maker a filler in a collector's collection. Alfred Edmeade Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister. Studies art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street,contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch','The Tatler','The Bystander','Passing Show' and various lesser magazines. In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November, 1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
